Add or subtract two durations given in hours, minutes and seconds. The result comes back as hours, minutes and seconds, in decimal hours, and in total seconds.

How the Time Calculator Works
The Time Calculator adds or subtracts two durations written in hours, minutes, and seconds, and then shows the answer in several useful forms at once. Instead of borrowing and carrying across awkward sixties in your head, you enter each duration as hours, minutes, and seconds, choose add or subtract, and get a clean result. People use it for work sessions, editing times, cooking and training intervals, travel legs, and any timesheet, video timeline, or race result split into chunks needing a single total.
The method is to convert everything to the smallest unit first. Each duration is converted to seconds using hours times 3,600 plus minutes times 60 plus the seconds themselves, because there are 3,600 seconds in an hour and 60 seconds in a minute. The two totals in seconds are then added together, or the second is subtracted from the first, and the combined total is converted back into hours, minutes, and seconds by dividing by 3,600 for hours and by 60 for the remaining minutes. Alongside that, the calculator reports the total seconds on its own and the decimal hours form, which is the total seconds divided by 3,600.
This calculator implements that conversion exactly, so there is no rounding inside the main hours, minutes, and seconds result. You can enter more than 60 minutes or more than 24 hours, and they will be converted correctly rather than rejected. Decimal hours are shown for jobs like billing and payroll, where 2.25 hours is easier to multiply by a rate than 2 hours and 15 minutes. If a subtraction gives a negative answer, the calculator keeps its sign, so you can see the second duration was longer, and by how much.
How to Use This Calculator
- Enter the first duration using the hours, minutes, and seconds fields, filling in zero for any part you do not need.
- Choose add or subtract, depending on whether you are combining two durations or finding the difference between them.
- Enter the second duration in its hours, minutes, and seconds fields.
- Press Calculate to convert both durations to seconds and combine them.
- Read the result in hours, minutes, and seconds, and also note the total seconds and decimal hours below it.
Example
For a tested example, add 1:30:00 and 0:45:00. The first duration is 5,400 seconds and the second is 2,700 seconds, giving a combined total of 8,100 seconds. Converted back, the result is 2:15:00, which is two hours and fifteen minutes. The same answer in decimal hours is 2.25 decimal hours, because fifteen minutes is one quarter of an hour. So the tested result is: 1:30:00 + 0:45:00 = 2:15:00 = 8,100 seconds = 2.25 decimal hours.
As a second example, subtract 1:45:00 from 3:00:00. In seconds that is 10,800 minus 6,300, which gives 4,500 seconds. Converted back, the result is 1:15:00, or 1.25 hours. So 3:00:00 − 1:45:00 = 1:15:00 = 4,500 seconds = 1.25 hours.
Understanding Your Result
The three output forms suit different tasks. Hours, minutes, and seconds is the clearest form for clocks, timers, recipes, and video timelines, because it matches how the original durations were written. Total seconds is most useful for technical work, spreadsheets, and comparing many small intervals, since it is a single number with no units to convert. Decimal hours is the form payroll, invoicing, and time-tracking software usually want, because you can multiply it directly by an hourly rate without first converting minutes into fractions of an hour.
Remember that the part after the decimal point is a fraction of an hour, not minutes: 0.5 hours is 30 minutes, and 0.25 hours is 15 minutes. Keeping the three forms together also helps you spot typing slips, because a total that looks right in minutes and seconds should also look right in decimal hours. A minus sign on a subtraction is information, not an error: the amount subtracted was bigger than the starting amount.
Time Calculator FAQs
Why does the calculator convert everything to seconds first?
Seconds are the smallest unit here, so converting first avoids errors when minutes or seconds pass sixty. The exact total can then be converted back, or left as seconds.
What does decimal hours mean, and how is it different from minutes?
Decimal hours express a duration as a fraction of one hour, so 1.5 hours means one hour and thirty minutes, not one hour and fifty minutes. The calculator finds it by dividing the total seconds by 3,600, which makes it easy to use for pay and billing.
Can I enter more than 60 minutes or more than 24 hours?
Yes, the fields do not force normal clock limits, because these are durations rather than times of day. Entering 90 minutes, for example, will be handled correctly and shown as one hour and thirty minutes in the converted result.
What happens if my subtraction gives a negative result?
The calculator keeps the sign on the result, in hours, minutes, and seconds, in total seconds, and in decimal hours. A negative answer simply tells you the second duration was longer, and by exactly how much.
How do I add more than two durations?
Add the first two durations, note the result, then enter that result and add the next one. Repeating this running-total method lets you combine as many sessions as you need.
